Again today

the smoke of my fire summons

a pair of robins—

rare, western yellow robins.

Without shyness,

one sits on the stovepipe of

a burnt grasstree,

stares at me with its black eye,

while the other

drops to the damp leaf-litter

skirting the fire

to attack some small creature

fleeing the devouring heat.
