Dingding Xiang now lives in Shanghai China, where she teaches English at Fudan University. Starting as a literary translator, Dingding now ventures to write her own stories, which, she hopes, could bring the readers to the depth of life lived by a new generation of Chinese people. Her translations include J. K. Rowling’s The Casual Vacancy (2012) and Joe Dunthorne’s Submarine (2011). ‘The Night My Grandfather Died’ is her first creative piece in English.
